Hunt: Showdown is the latest offering by the highly regarded Crytek, the studio behind the Crysis series. It is a first-person online only shooter which may disapoint fans of single player games, especially considering how good the story was in Crysis.
The game focuses around 1895 in Louisiana and the invasion of monsters who have invaded the world. Bounty hunters have been asked to hunt and kill the monsters and send them back to the other dimension. Monsters range from giant creepy spiders to the weird twisted undead.
The better you become at the game to more you will be hunted as your information becomes available to opponents. Overall the monster designs are extremely good with varied monsters and abilities.
You can upgrade your weapons and armour by using in-game currency you earn. You start the game with a basic under powered rifle and revolver so upgrading quickly is essential.
Being online only the big problem for some will be finding a team to play with as playing on your own against an established team will do you no favours as they will hunt together as a team. The game has 3v, 2v and solo but encourages team work so finding a team to play with on a regular basis is vital.
Graphically, the game is beautiful with great textures and frame rates. This has to be one of the best looking games on the Xbox. The atmosphere can be stunning at times especially when you are at a stand-off and you are the last man standing against the opposition team of four.
We wanted to enjoy playing Hunt: Showdown but felt short changed without the single player as we found the online gameplay tedious after a while.
